Green Clivias: A Rare Beauty Reshaping the Clivia World
Green-flowered Clivias remain among the most unusual and highly sought-after novelties in the Clivia world. Their ethereal beauty, subtle coloration, and inherent rarity make them truly captivating. Encountering a well-grown green Clivia in another breeder’s collection is enough to make even the most seasoned enthusiast green with envy.
Once confined to only a handful of collections, green Clivias have gained significant recognition in recent years and are now regarded as one of the most exciting and progressive developments in modern Clivia breeding.
Foundational Green Strains
Two of the most influential and widely circulated green strains are Hirao Green and TK (Tokyo) Green. Both originate from Group 2 yellow genetics and display a remarkable range of green expression, from cool mint and pale jade to deeper olive and lime tones.
When crossed with other Group 2 yellows, these plants frequently produce:
Outstanding green-throated yellows
Improved flower substance
Enhanced colour depth
As a result, Hirao and TK greens have become essential components in advanced breeding programmes worldwide.
Charl’s Green: A Benchmark Green Clivia
Among all green Clivias, Charl’s Green stands in a category of its own. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and genetically intriguing Clivias ever bred, it has generated extensive discussion and admiration within the Clivia community.
Dr. Harold Koopowitz has highlighted Charl’s Green for its lack of yellow pigmentation, a highly unusual trait that may one day prove pivotal in the long-term pursuit of a true white Clivia. Charl’s Green is believed to be a Group 2 yellow interspecific, further enhancing its breeding value and genetic significance.
The Ice Series: White-Tinged Greens
At Utopia Clivias, we have worked extensively with Charl’s Green F1 plants, using them as the foundation for our own breeding line. From this work emerged what we now call the Ice Series.
These plants represent second-generation whites with green highlights—extraordinarily rare Clivias distinguished by their icy tones, clean colouring, and refined elegance. Selection within this line is meticulous, as we continue to refine clarity, balance, and overall flower quality.
Hirao Excellence: Hottie’s Hirao
Another standout in green Clivia breeding is Hottie’s Hirao, widely recognised as one of the finest Hirao breeders globally. Its pollen has been used to produce several well-known offspring, including Zol and Daggacookie, both of which have earned acclaim for:
Superior flower quality
Consistent breeding behaviour
Strong green expression
This line continues to play an important role in our ongoing green breeding efforts.
The 1212 Green Series
One of our most exciting green projects focuses on the development of compact, semi broad-leaf green Clivias. This line originated from an early cross between Coromandel Bronze × Charl’s Green and is now collectively known as the 1212 Green Series.
From the original seedlings, we selected plants showing:
Strong green stem pigmentation
Good vigour
Promising plant architecture
These were grown to flowering size, evaluated carefully, and only the best performers retained. Each year, further selection is made to strengthen the line.
Our objective is to produce:
Smaller, more compact plants
Higher flower counts
Intense, stable green pigmentation
Second-Generation Greens: Refinement and Progress
Across our broader breeding programme, we have produced numerous F2 green Clivias derived from Hirao, TKO, and Charl’s Green lineage. These second-generation plants consistently demonstrate:
Improved flower numbers
Stronger and clearer green tones
More compact growth habits
With each generation, we move closer to the ideal green Clivia—combining colour purity, plant balance, and floral excellence.
The Green Clivia Revolution
The green Clivia revolution is well underway, and it represents one of the most promising frontiers in modern Clivia breeding. What was once considered an anomaly is now an expanding and highly refined colour group with enormous future potential.
At Utopia Clivias, we are proud to be at the forefront of this movement and look forward to discovering what the next generations of green hybrids will reveal as we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in Clivia breeding.
