Splash Flowers: The Artistry of Clivia
Splash flowers are a visually striking and highly sought-after form of Clivia, distinguished by a secondary color suffused or brushed across the tepals. This “splashed” or hand-painted effect often creates dramatic contrast, giving each flower a unique and painterly appearance.
With the increasing popularity and intentional development of these forms, splash flowers are now classified as a distinct category within our Clivia collections. Not only do these plants captivate the eye, but many also breed true for the splash trait when crossed with other splash types, making them both beautiful and genetically valuable.
Notable Splash Varieties
Andrew Gibson
A historic wild-collected plant, Andrew Gibson features yellow petals with pink suffusion, especially on the outer surfaces. Its broad, recurved tepals are sensitive to light, which can influence the depth and intensity of color. This clone is also known as Andrew Gibson Pink, Andrew Gibson Picotee, or Gibson Pink, and serves as a foundation for many modern splash lines.
Chubb Splash
Derived from Andrew Gibson, Chubb Splash displays a yellow base with vivid red splashes on the reverse of the petals. The bold contrast makes it a collector favorite and a standout in any display or breeding programme.
777 Series
Originating from breeder Pikkie Strumpher, the 777 splash cultivars are known for eye-catching coloration and reliable transmission of splash traits in offspring. These plants are highly prized for both aesthetics and genetic utility.
Fairytales
A cross between Wow and Gibson, Fairytales inherits whimsical splash patterns and delicate coloring, continuing the legacy of its parents while introducing subtle refinement in flower form.
Royal Gala
Bred from Andrew Gibson × Naude’s Peach, Royal Gala combines elegance with painterly expression, producing a soft peach-toned flower accented with delicate splash markings.

Pollocks: A New Splash-Inspired Range
Our new range of Pollocks is directly bred from these splash lines. By using select splash parents, we have created a collection of plants that showcase the most artistic traits of splash flowers while also introducing refined modern form and structure.
The Pollocks represent a continuation of our dedication to innovative, visually striking Clivias, combining painterly patterns with excellent breeding potential, and offering exciting possibilities for future hybrid development.
Breeding Value
Splash flowers are not only visually stunning—they are genetically valuable. When crossed strategically:
They tend to pass on splash traits reliably
They can introduce new color layering and pattern complexity into breeding programmes
They add both novelty and sophistication to interspecific and miniata lines
Splash Clivias, including our new Pollocks, demonstrate how artistry and science intersect, giving breeders an opportunity to explore entirely new dimensions of color, form, and pattern in modern Clivia cultivation.
