Beyond Ordinary: The Future of Multi-Tepal Clivia Breeding

Written by Carrie and Luke Kruger – Utopia Clivias

For more than two decades, we have been actively engaged in multi-tepal Clivia breeding, methodically refining our lines and expanding the genetic and aesthetic potential of the genus. Our current focus is firmly on interspecific multi-tepal Clivia breeding, an area that holds exceptional promise for advancing flower form, colour complexity, and horticultural value.

This article outlines the foundations of our program, highlights key breeding plants, and documents important first-flowering results that mark meaningful progress toward stable, elite multi-tepal interspecific Clivia.

Foundation of Our Multi-Tepal Interspecific Breeding Program

Our interspecific multi-tepal breeding program is built on two cornerstone plants that contributed both genetic depth and structural form:

  • Multi-tepal Clivia robusta
  • Desert Rose, a 50% multi-tepal interspecific

These plants formed the genetic backbone of our early work and produced a first generation of multi-tepal interspecific seedlings displaying a broad range of expression. As is typical in multi-tepal breeding, variability remains a defining characteristic—posing challenges, but also creating opportunities for unexpected and exciting outcomes.

Further advancement came through the use of Desert Rose as pod parent, crossed with Secret Desire, one of our leading interspecific breeding plants. This pairing produced Secret Obsession, a plant not fully multi-tepal but distinguished by striking versi-colour blooms with partial multi-tepal expression. Its quality was recognised when it achieved 1st place at the 2025 GRCC Interspecific Show, validating the strength of this genetic direction.

Another pivotal acquisition in our program is Rocketman, a 75% multi-tepal interspecific bred by John van der Linde and obtained at the 2018 International Clivia Society Conference auction. Rocketman has since become a key contributor in our pursuit of higher-percentage, consistently expressed multi-tepal interspecifics.

Recent Highlights in Multi-Tepal Interspecific Breeding

The following selections represent significant recent progress, each contributing important genetic information and breeding value to our program.

Bronze Bomb × Multi-Tepal Hirao

(First flowering 2024)

Although the initial flowers were not fully multi-tepal, they exhibited exceptionally broad tepals that created a strong near-multi visual effect. These plants clearly carry the multi-tepal gene and represent a critical step toward the development of cinnamon-pink, green-tipped multi-tepal interspecific Clivia.

Sibling crosses, self-pollinations, and pollen applications onto confirmed multi-tepal interspecifics have already been completed, with future generations eagerly anticipated.

KB Versi × QO8

(First flowering 2024)

This cross delivered an extraordinary result: a 100% multi-tepal versi-colour interspecific on a compact, short-leaf plant—despite neither parent showing visible multi-tepal traits. The outcome strongly suggests the presence of a recessive multi-tepal gene, making this plant a highly valuable breeding discovery.

Secret Miracle

(First flowering 2025)

Incorporating Clivia mirabilis genetics, this plant produced a full umbel of versi-colour blooms with strong multi-tepal expression. Tall, dramatic, and highly ornamental, it reflects the bold stature often associated with mirabilis-influenced lines and represents an exciting direction for future refinement.

Dream of Hearts (Dream Series)

While not a first-flowering plant, Dream of Hearts is notable for its approximately 75% multi-tepal expression combined with an impressively full umbel. It remains an important reference point within our Dream Series.

Dreamtopia (Dream Series)

(First flowering 2023)

This compact multi-tepal interspecific does not set seed but produces viable pollen, which has been used extensively across our breeding program. Progeny from these crosses are now developing, and their results are keenly awaited.

Autumn Whisper F1 × Autumn Whisper

(First flowering 2023, repeat flowering 2025)

Initially displaying limited multi-tepal expression, this plant underwent a dramatic improvement on its second flowering cycle, presenting a 100% multi-tepal, full-head display in 2025. It is now being paired with Rocketman as part of our targeted effort to achieve stable bronze multi-tepal interspecific Clivia.

The Future of Multi-Tepal Clivia

Multi-tepal Clivia breeding is a long-term, highly specialised pursuit that rewards patience, observation, and genetic insight. While outcomes remain variable, recent advances—particularly within interspecific lines—demonstrate clear progress toward more reliable expression, greater diversity, and increased horticultural significance.

At Utopia Clivias, we remain committed to pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the genus. As these exceptional plants continue to evolve, we look forward to sharing the next chapter of a breeding journey that is steadily moving beyond ordinary and shaping the future of Clivia excellence.
