The Future of Clivias: Why Interspecific Hybrids Are a Game Changer
At Utopia Clivias, we’re passionate about innovation in Clivia breeding—and one of the most exciting developments in recent years has been the rise of interspecific clivias. These hybrids are created by crossing two or more of the six known Clivia species: Clivia Caulescens, C. Gardenii, C. Miniata, C. Mirabilis, C. Nobilis and C. Robusta. The result? A new generation of Clivias that are bolder, hardier, and more diverse than ever before.
As featured in the July 2022 edition of SA Garden & Home, interspecific Clivias represent the new age of Civia breeding. Here’s why these unique plants are worth a place in your collection or garden:
6 Key Benefits of Growing Interspecific Clivias
Vigorous Growth & Multiplication
Interspecific Clivias tend to multiply well and establish themselves quickly, making them ideal for collectors and gardeners alike.Hardiness & Pest Resistance
These hybrids are generally more robust and resilient than pure species, showing improved resistance to pests and diseases.Extended Flowering Season
Many interspecifics begin blooming as early as June and continue through August. Some exceptional varieties, such as Star Green and Jingle Bells, may even flower more than once a year.Unique Flower Forms
Expect exciting variations in flower shape and structure, including semi-pendulous umbels and trumpet-shaped blooms—like those seen in Secret Strawberry Parfait.Distinctive Leaf Traits
Leaf forms are also evolving, with striking variations such as those found in Light of Rose, offering added ornamental appeal even when the plant is not in bloom.Innovative Colour Combinations
One of the most thrilling aspects of interspecific breeding is the explosion of new colours. From soft blends to dramatic contrasts, flowers like Jingle Bells and Star Green showcase the full potential of these hybrids.
A Breeder’s Dream
“When colour mutations, leaf variations, and other characteristics across all six species are considered, the breeding possibilities become endless,” explains Carrie Kruger of Utopia Clivias and the Clivia Society. “This is where the future of Clivias lies.”
Interspecific clivias are proving to be more than just a novelty—they are a resilient, diverse, and ever-evolving expression of what thoughtful plant breeding can achieve. With their stunning blooms and reliable performance, these plants are becoming increasingly available to gardeners who want something truly unique.
When Do They Flower?
While flowering times can vary depending on the hybrid, most interspecific Clivias bloom between May and September, with July typically being peak season.
